SUNSLATES ™
A bit of background:
At AES, we define sloped roofing as 4/12 or 18 degrees or steeper. This allows us to build a roof that will be in the words of one of California's largest production roofer "the driest roof they have installed". SUNSLATES™ is the granddaddy of BIPV roofing. It is a Class A roofing material (meaning resistance to flame). It has been successfully integrated into roof with concrete tile, asphalt shingles, even metal.
SUNSLATES™ success is attributed to its lamination with a quality roofing substrate that has dominated the European market for many years. As a result the SUNSLATES™ are not a solar panel pretending to be a roofing material, they started out that way. We have used from the beginning the European cold roof for our products. That means building a counter batten system under them to allow an air circulation between the slates and the roof deck. This helps in two ways: it creates a cooler attic thus lowering air conditioning demand and bills, and gives us the opportunity to use the rejected heat for domestic hot water using our hybrid system.
SUNSLATES™ are part of an advanced photovoltaic system that will not only turn your roof into a power plant, it is safety rated to keep your home safe from blackouts, wind, water, and fire.
A typical installation of 216 SUNSLATES™ (about 300 square feet or 28 square meters) will cover from 60 to 80% of your power needs, depending on location.
The slates are installed by an Atlantis certified installer. Atlantis Energy Systems, Inc. conducts Fundamental Commissioning through its dealers and installers and strongly encourages Full Commissioning of your system. Examples of Fully Commissioned projects are illustrated best in case studies Virginia and Illinois.

There are two dimensions of SUNSLATES™.
The original SUNSLATES™ has 2 rows of 3 125mm (5" cells) monocrystalline PV cells. Depending on the cell type it averages 13-14Watts per each. It takes 77 to make 9.3 Meters square or 100 square foot of roof (a roofers square) or 1kW of potential energy. This smaller size SUNSLATES™ does a good job of following the architectural lines of a complex roof since its foot print is only 1.3 square foot. Like its bigger brother it appears like a glossy slate on the roof and often disappears in to the roofscape. We can supply full and half slates with glass to give a more edge to edge look to the roof.
The larger variant of SUNSLATES™ uses the same configuration but with 156mm (6" cells). The slate requires only 50.4 for 100 square foot, so fewer connections and it produces 1080 Watts per same area. It works best on large expanse roofs.
